It is funny how many of my girlfriends don’t cook, or don’t like to cook. This makes no sense to me because I LOVE to cook; it is more of a creative outlet for me than anything else. So the idea of buying a precooked Thanksgiving dinner or going out to a restaurant is blasphemy. But plenty of people don’t like to cook, and for them, it must sound genius.

If you decide to forgo the standard tradition, or are making a new tradition, there are numerous vendors to choose from. Heck even the local grocery stores seems to carry the complete meal to go. Interested in eating out on Thanksgiving? Do you remember the scene from A Christmas Story? Apparently that is a thing of the past; everyone seems to be open this holiday. Again, blasphemy. I say let the restaurant industry spend their holidaysat home would ya? But alas, I am outnumbered. So if I had to go to a restaurant on Thanksgiving, I’d surely visit one with flat screens and the common sense to put on the games.

And while you are sitting at a booth somewhere surrounded by the culinary challenged. I’ll be lounging at my parent’s house, smelling the turkey, drinking mimosas, and watching football. And of course, I’ll be in the kitchen cooking comfort foods with my mama.

Trick or Treaters Wanted

Whatever happened to Halloween? And what the heck is “Trunk or Treat”? It sounds like something we should be doing with our significant others after the kids are asleep.

Seriously, does anyone else miss watching munchkins walk door to door, their plastic pumpkin heads filled with delicious goods? Spotting preteen Elvis’ and witches enjoying what may be their last year, carrying pillow covers sagging with loot. Do our children really have to settle for candy out of trunks in church parking lots and trick or treating at local malls?

And c’mon it’s not like you can trust everyone at church anyways. Yeah, I said it.

Let’s teach our kids we can have faith in our neighbors. And if you don’t want your kids to get overloaded on sugar, collect the candy and give it to charity. Or better yet, issue a snack out every once in a while, practice some control.

Let’s not make it so difficult. Look forward to Halloween, don’t be afraid, dress up your little pumpkins, grab some flashlights, sacks for treats and hit the streets.

Here’s the plan, pick the houses you want to visit, and don’t go to the scary ones. Spend time with your kids while you still can, they’ll be driving away in your SUVs before you know it. Have a Kit Kat and relax already, you’re gonna have a good time.
BTW trick or treating can be considered cardio.

Get in the spirit; throw on a funky hat or wig or something. Remember I’m not trying to change the world; just having a little bit of candy is all. It’s one night, enjoy it and get on with your life.

Most of the ladies I know do not look forward to football season. Now that we are in the thick of it, instead of loathing it, why not join the party? Coming from a girl who loves the sport, my goal is to encourage women to tolerate it at the very least, maybe even learn to love the game.

Women appreciate tasty hot wings, cold beer and cute guys, right? I’d say we’re halfway there. My suggestion is this, just try to look at football from a different angle -- the female angle; it’s a great way to meet men, tailgating is encouraged, and the football uniforms look pretty damn good from here.

I’m not asking you to learn what a “false start” is, or what the Tight End does, or even what a 2-point conversion means. I’m just asking you to look at football in a way you’ve never seen it before, through Gucci sunglasses and eyelash extensions.

Here are the top ten reasons Ladies should enjoy football season:

10. Mark Sanchez - sure he's a tad young, but he'll be around for a while.

9. For once, you may know where your boyfriend/husband is every Monday night, Thursday night and Sunday. Include Saturday too, if he’s a college football guy, and what self-respecting football watcher isn’t?

8. He won’t care if you go shopping as long as you stay out of the way of the TV.

7. Tony Gonzalez, even if he is married.

6. Football season only lasts around five months, six if you include pre-season, and that’s a helluva lot shorter than baseball season.

5. A great reason to start drinking early on a Sunday.

4. You can give your Swedish maid costume a break because your guy is totally involved in another fantasy.

3. He won’t actually drag you to a game unless you head to San Diego or Northern Cal; we’re still the largest metropolitan area without a football team. Didn’t the Rams leave like 16 years ago?

2. When a girl wears a football jersey it hides all of the squishy parts and boys think girls in sports outfits are awfully cute.

So go forth ladies with your new outlook and celebrate the best tradition since turkey on Thanksgiving, or ham on New Year’s Day and yes, we all watch football on those days too. I Love the Smell of Pumpkin in the Morning

Am I the only one who waits anxiously all year for pumpkin flavored treats to pop up again? Does anyone else possess a peppermint palate or a gingerbread gusto?

Let's face it the old standards are around all year long; chocolate, vanilla, red velvet, carrot, lemon...and don't get me wrong, I'm a HUGE fan of these flavors. And clearly there is a reason they are in for the long haul. But there is something sweet about an old familiar essence arriving at my local coffee house or favorite bakery. Boy am I thrilled the wait is finally over.

For instance, this morning I tasted my first Starbucks Salted Caramel Mocha and I was delighted, you can't get that at Eastertime. Admitting the free coffee postcard I received in the mail was addressed to a "Beata Cuffee", and she probably would have enjoyed the coffee as well as I did if she truly did exist. But as luck would have it, the card arrived at my house and my coffee nickname became "Bee" for the morning.

I'm the type of person who will drift from milk chocolate in search of some seasonal savory. I'll pop an eggnog treat or two, and have even tried a fruitcake in the past.

And I do agree that these periodic pals are more than welcomed, they are some of the scents and tastes that help define a season. Without the balance of nature, we'd be eating pumpkin muffins all year long and would have nothing to look forward to in the fall. I'll go along with it and I'll even raise my glass of spiked apple cider to prove it.

Falling in Love with Fall

It’s fall again. My favorite time of the year. School, football and the holiday season are upon us.

I love the pumpkin lattes, the gingerbread Just a Bite Cake Pops and anything else with snowflakes or tinsel. This season always feels like family. It feels like a movie on a rainy Tuesday, or a football game on a Monday night. The tourists have gone home and I can reclaim my beach city. Nothing about fall isn’t delightful, except maybe the threat of California fires.

With that being said, this year was a bit different. I sent my eldest daughter off to Kindergarten. I miss her already. I miss knowing what she is doing, seeing who she is playing with and I miss having lunch with her every day. This may be a bit dramatic, but it seems like the beginning to a whole lot of not seeing her. She will be going to school for the next 13 years, and hopefully after that, she’ll be off to college. It seems like a long way off, but man, it seems like it’s just around the corner.

At least she's still young enough to enjoy crunching the leaves under her feet and picking out a costume for her favorite holiday. Maybe I'll order myself some Halloween Just a Bite Cake Pops and head off to the pumpkin patch while I still can, her little hand in mine.

We love events and we love kids, so being a part of the Pretend City Anniversary Party was a no-brainer. The festivities took place last Monday and there were over 400 Plum Moms and Families in attendance. We handed out pops by the handful. The kids enjoyed the museum while they snacked on vanilla and chocolate pops in an array of cheerful colors.

Light and Healthy Summer Salad

This summer we have been eating outside quite a bit. Friends and family have gathered, sometimes it is just the four of us and our dog Denver, but no matter who is present, our dinner is always tasty. We have been enjoying light meals that are full of flavor. The following recipe is my most fave of the entire season. It's my go to salad and I hope you will enjoy it soon. Seriously, I make this salad every other week, no fail.

Tortellini Pasta Salad with Tomatoes, Olives, Mozzarella and Arugula

Ingredients:

1 lb of your favorite fresh tortellini

1 cup grape tomatoes - halved

1 cup fresh arugula

1/4 cup your favorite olives

8 oz fresh mozzarella balls

Dressing:

1 cup olive oil

1/2 teaspoon whole fresh thyme leaves

1 tablespoon minced fresh garlic

2 lemons, zested

1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

2 tablespoons Champagne or white wine vinegar

2 teaspoons kosher salt

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Handful grated parmesan for the top

Cook tortellini as directed, let cool. Combine pasta, tomatoes, arugula, olives and mozzarella. On the side combine all dressing ingredients and whisk until blended. Pour over top of pasta and toss. Top with parmesan cheese if desired. Serve warm or chilled for best results.

Summertime Snacks with a Healthy Twist

We all love the summertime; beach trips, vacations, cook outs, fairs, amusement parks and lots of lots of food. I always seem to gain weight in the summer because the hours are longer and the food is more abundant, or maybe the sun makes me hungry. Either way, summer foods are creative, fresh and sometimes fatty, but they don’t have to be. Here are some of our favorite summer foods, with a healthy twist.

Watermelon and Feta Salad, sounds strange right? It is so refreshing and light, and full of flavor. Slice watermelon and top with crumbled feta cheese, drizzle with light olive oil and fresh dill. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Remember to eat soon to avoid soggy melon.

Kabobs are the easiest way to cook in the summer. Better yet, grab a grill basket and toss all the ingredients inside, saves time layering the food and soaking the sticks. We love the combination of fresh vegetables or fruits and meats or seafood. It’s also smart to have two baskets, one for veggies and fruit and one for meat, since the meat takes a bit longer and no one likes overcooked vegetables.

Keep it light by cutting back on the marinade, substitute with a rub like McCormick’s Grill Mates® Cowboy Rub and double the amount of veggies. Grill 5-7 minutes on each side and enjoy with a salad or fruit on the side. It’s also smart to have two baskets, one for veggies and fruit and one for meat, since the meat takes a bit longer and no one likes overcooked vegetables.

Lastly, a low fat summer dessert is always an option with all the fruit in season. Grab some light vanilla yogurt and top with fresh berries and a drizzle of honey. Crumble a handful of graham crackers for some crunch and take pleasure in knowing you aren’t only having something sweet, but you’ll still be able to wear a bathing suit in the morning.

Because Weddings are a BLAST

This past week we attended the Associaton of Bridal Consultants http://www.bridalassn.com/ evening at Tustin Ranch Golf Club in Tustin http://www.tustinranchgolf.com/layout.asp?id=525&page=27059. The venue is amazing, and we were proud to have Just a Bite Cake Pops sponsor the dessert portion of the night.

Our display was our new treat tower, wrapped in satin ribbon and loaded with delicious cake pops. Our bride and groom cake pops stood happily ever after at the tippity top of the tower. We also designed a cake pop bouquet, perfect for photo opportunities for a flower girl and ring bearer, or as a tasty decorative touch added to a bridal shower or bachelorette party.

The vendors of the night we are exciting event companies and we felt honored to share the spotlight with all of them. Rebranding Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving has always been one of those holidays that is a little blurry for me. Growing up, my parents dragged my brother and I to some friends of the family’s house where we sat and waited (for far too long it seemed) to have a big meal and then there would be a lot of sitting, and talking, and then pumpkin pie, and then we would finally go home.

Once I left home and moved west, Thanksgiving was always a potluck of friends getting together and eating and drinking together. Having Thanksgiving away from home always caused a bit of anxiety about “where am I going to have Thanksgiving dinner this year???”.

Then our family had a rough Thanksgiving in 2006 … suffice it to say it was a tough year to celebrate. Since then, I have struggled to really get excited about the pilgrim patented, turkey touting, overindulgent holiday. I have found myself trying to figure out, for myself, what this particular occasion means to me, and how can I give it meaning for myself personally.

Which brings me to my personal goal for this season – to rebrand Thanksgiving. Rename it, retheme it, give it a whole new life… and I’m looking for suggestions. This effort is going to be based on a theme of gratitude. Gratitude for what I have, and for what I don’t. Gratitude for the ability to breathe deeply and love freely. Gratitude for my family who is so dear to me, though they are miles away. Gratitude for the gifts in my life that are too many to count.

I look forward to a week of personal celebration of this gratitude and even I am not sure how that will unfold. I know only that as I enter the season of giving, I am striving to do so with a peaceful mind, open heart and healthy body. I invite you to share with us how you will be celebrating your gratitude this week. As for my rebranding efforts, we will keep you posted. In the meantime, Just a Bite wishes you a grateful beginning to your holiday season.

What a night out it was, filled with celebrities, great deals and fantastic Just a Bite™ Cake Pops. Fashion’s Night Out (FNO) was this past Friday night at Fashion Island in Newport Beach, CA. The evening was abuzz with TV personalities and local socialites, not to mention tons of people shopping and getting into the spirit of the FNO.

Just a Bite™ was only one of the vendors at the Island. We handed out chocolate, red velvet and vanilla cake pops decorated in white, red and black, to shoppers. The pops were such a huge hit we actually ran out by 7pm and the event lasted well until 9pm. What a rush to be devoured by the public. Everyone just loved the pops. We even handed out some cake pops to the stars; Lo Bosworth of Laguna Beach and The Hills and Lynne Curtin of the Real Housewives of OC enjoyed the tasty treats.

So happy to be a part of the Irvine Company’s extravaganza. Thanks to all who showed up, ate the pops and shopped ‘til they dropped.

Raspberry, Paisley and Pops

We’ve got custom orders in the bag, Vera Bradley’s bags that is. We were so fortunate to work with Vera Bradley recently on a huge cake pop order. Just a Bite™ cake pops was part of the huge Fall Launch to 29 Vera Bradley stores. The goal was to color match one of the newest prints, Very Berry Paisley, and create a raspberry cake to die for and we did it. Our busy poppers were working overtime to get out more than 1400 pops. From the East Coast to Hawaii, our raspberry pops headed to the stores this past week, fifty to each, and boy we couldn’t be more proud.

Vera Bradley was founded over 27 years ago by two friends, Barbara Bradley Baekgaard and Patricia R Miller, and named after Baekgaard’s mother Vera. On a vacation in 1982, the two friends noticed there was a lack of feminine luggage in the marketplace. They wasted no time and within two weeks a company was born. 31 Bits Launch Party

Just a Bite™ is partnering with 31 Bits for a boutique line launch party this summer. The event will be held Thursday, June 24th from 5:30-8:00pm at the Westerly in Corona Del Mar. Part of the proceeds will be going to 31 Bits and the women who make it possible.

31 Bits started out in 2008 when five college students from Southern California traveled to Uganda and met six amazing women. These women were creating piece of artwork disguised as jewelry, they needed to feed their families and pay for school, medical and shelter. Unfortunately the market was lacking and these intuitive college girls knew they could make a difference. 31 Bits provides a market for the jewelry made in Uganda and is helping to change lives, one necklace at a time.

Taste of the Nation:No Kid Hungry

Helping to end children’s hunger is of great importance to Just a Bite™. This past weekend we participated in a fantastic event called Taste of the Nation: No Kid Hungry. It is one of 55 events taking place this summer, throughout the United States, in an effort to end childhood hunger. This star-filled affair took place at Media Park in Culver City on June 6th.

Brilliant LA chefs, mixologists and dessert divas, like our own Mindy Himmel, donate their time and talent to this cause. From Chilean Sea Bass to Thai Shrimp Skewers to Chocolate Cake Pops, every food you could imagine was in attendance. Funds are raised to support local recipients like St. Joseph’s Canter, Los Angeles Coalition to End Hunger and Homelessness , Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and California Food Policy Advocates.

Our Cake Pops were displayed in the exclusive VIP tent and we were thrilled at the response. Just A Bite™ loves to work with parties and weddings, but we definitely have a soft spot for a charity. When you meet a person who is professional, thoughtful and friendly, you just want to shout it from the rooftops. Sharon Gall is one of these people. She is an amazing Event Planner and works under the name Once Upon A Time (Weddings & Special Events). Even her business sounds magical.

What do a pink carpet, movie premiere, cosmos, and Just a Bite Cake Pops have in common? Get Carried Away Sex and the City 2 premiere party, West Coast style. We were thrilled to be part of such a fantastic event. Nicole with the Henley Company was kind enough to include us in the Sex and the City 2 swag bags at this one of a kind party. And the Henley Company sure does know how to throw a party.

We were ecstatic to be a part of the biggest premiere party this side of Rockefeller Center and decided to serve up hot pink and white cake pops in honor of the famous foursome. Everyone deserves a little fancy. And what says fancy better than Tiffany blue? This past week, with the help of our special talents in color matching, we made over 100 red velvet cake pops with Tiffany blue candy coating and white sprinkles. The colors went so well together and really "pop". Our bride also requested chocolate pops with white candy coating, topped with chocolate jimmys. Today, Just a Bite got to participate in a B'nai Mitzvah at 7 Degrees in Laguna Beach AND an amazing wedding at the Fairmont in Newport Beach. The B'nai Mitzvah was for a brother and sister. The theme colors were neon green and hot pink. What fun colors!! We got to partner with Francie from Balloons Sound Great. She makes amazing balloon arrangements (check out her website) as well as custom sculptures and displays. We brought the cake pops and she created the fantastic displays to show them off. Check out these pics of us setting up, the finished product and a couple examples of Francie's creativity for this event.

We even ran into a couple at 7 Degrees that was checking out the venue for their wedding and we gave them a couple pops we had to spare.

Next, on to the Fairmont. The display for the wedding we created ourselves. And the brainpower to create a circular display designed to hold and show off 435 cake pops, each with a handwritten placecard, was no small feat. We couldn't have pulled if off without all of the great ideas and help.

The foam that made the base for the display was too large to assemble before delivery so we put it together onsite and then carefully placed the cake pops around the beautiful manzanita tree arrangement created by Manjit of Manjit's Flower Cottage. Three words, OMG. The centerpiece was amazing but that was just the beginning. The floral touches throughout the ballroom and in the entry area took your breath away. His creativity and detailed touch added such elegance to our shared placecard presentation. Enjoy the photos of the Just a Bite wedding display and some of Manjit's work. What a fantastic day.

It is such a joy to see all of the hard work come together when we get to share our creations for events such as these.

Taste of the Nation

Taste of the Nation Orange County was held at the Island Hotel on Fri April 23. What a fantastic event. All proceeds went to Share our Strength, an organization whose mission is to battle childhood hunger in the United States. A number of local chefs shared their talent with the guests, Marbella Country Club, the Montage, the Crow Bar, Bluefin and Sage, just to name a few of the featured restaurants. Just a Bite was excited to be the only dessert-only participant. Though the event ended at 9pm, we “sold out” a little after 8. We will take that as a compliment.

Enjoy the photos of our table as well as the group of talented chefs that participated in this event (as well as some of our pop fans enjoying their treats).

Next year, note this as a must attend event. Delectable tastes from some of the finest local chefs, live music, cocktails, the Island Hotel, silent auction… what else could one request for a night to remember.

I have lived "out west" for 13 years now but before I made my move, I grew up in a fantastic little city in Ohio called Dublin, Ohio. As you might imagine from the name of our town, it definitely has an irish flair. Our school mascot was a Shamrock and there was a HUGE St Patrick's Day ever year where you actually got "arrested" if you didn't wear green. We were proud to be the "edible" sponsor at this past Wednesday's ABC Orange County's coordinators' luncheon at The Dock in Newport Beach. Lindsay Longacre of LVL Events was kind enough to invite us. Not only did we have an opportunity to showcase our cake pops for over 40 bridal consultants but also met some other fantastic entrepreneurs in the industry.

Kristy McTaggart of Artiface created some beautiful custom nametags and menus to match the violet and red theme of the luncheon.

The colors were chosen by Larrissa Rehder, owner of Inviting Occasion, a floral and event design company. Her eye for art and beauty, and innovative ideas helped her win the 2009 Association of Bridal Consultants Trendsetters Award. This was Just a Bite's first coordinators' luncheon and Larrissa was happy to lend a hand (and several display elements) to help us create a table of pops for the coordinators to see and try. Capturing all of these memorable touches was Joel of Studio EMP. You will see some samples of his work in this blog. Thanks Joel for catching these great pop shots!

Hosting this elegant and festive luncheon was Christine Overstreet, owner of The Dock. Although I have not had a chance to dine there, the atmosphere was intimate and beautiful, right on the water. The hors d'oeuvres chosen for the event were divine, strawberries on a skewer with spun sugar, eggplant tempura topped with ahi and caviar, and ceviche served on a silver spoon. I can't wait to go back! My favorite touch was the candy bar Christine had set up for her guests to take a final treat for the road.

Cake pops have been very popular for weddings. They are often used as escort cards. In additon, cake pop bouquets make beautiful centerpieces and can be customized to match the flowers and linens.

Just a Bite got Whisked Away in Phoenix

Maggie Norris, a dear friend of mine from Phoenix, Arizona has her very own home based cooking school, Whisked Away. She is an amazing chef herself and loves to share her knowledge and joy of cooking with others. A couple of times each month, she holds a kids cooking class and this month, I had the pleasure of teaching the little ones how to make cake pops. What fun we had! So much creativity in the group.

First, we read the recipe together and I did a demonstration so the kids would see what happens behind the scenes at Just a Bite Cake Pops in California. Then, they each had the chance to decorate a dozen pops of their very own. We had snowmen and candy apples and ideas I had never dreamed of myself. Maggie made the kids feel at home with M&Ms and hot cocoa, yet professional with an apron for each of them.

Whisked Away provides adult classes throughout the week that are great for a evening out with your special someone or just the gals. Also offering private chef services for dinner parties in your home. A fun way to learn to cook or sharpen your already savvy culinary skills.

Harvest Carnival

Tonight was the Tijeras Creek Elementary School PTA Harvest Carnival. From where we were sitting (at a table between the DJ and the popcorn booth), it

appeared to be a huge success for the school. There were bounce houses, games, facepainting, hula hoop contests, a silent auction a DJ and even Clifford made an appearance.

It was also a fantastic night for Just a Bite Cake Pops. We set up a table and were selling pops by the ones, twos and dozens. The kids were not sure at first what they were but were happy to add them to their handfuls of cotton candy and popcorn once they heard they were CAKE!

Pumpkin poptops were a hit but the kids' favorite was chocolate by a landslide.

Just a Bite Cake Pops is going big time! We are moving Pop Central into a commercial kitchen space. I was lucky enough to stumble upon Ann Crane and Meyerhof's Fine Catering in Irvine. Ann, owner of Meyerhof's, has an amazing space that she was willing to share with Just a Bite Cake Pops. Meyerhof's is a full service catering operation that has been serving southern California since 1970.

I am so grateful and delighted that my cake pop venture has grown enough to warrant this next step.

Thank you all for your support and encouragement along the way. We are so excited to be growing in such leaps and bounds. Here are some sneak peaks of our new headquarters... the lovely young lady in the photo is Adrienne, my right (and left) hand in the kitchen. I have always had a ridiculous sweet tooth and I always find myself wanting just a bite (or sometimes 2 or 3...).
